Ryan will graduate from LaSalle high school next Summer and would be yet another Lancer to have signed with the Bearcats. Most prominently, J.K. Schaffer also played for LaSalle and enrollee-now-JUCO Rodriquez Coleman was a class of 2011 signee. The Lancers play in the infamous GCL conference with the likes of Elder and St. Xavier. Competition is always high in these games and it really makes the best of the players involved, thus making Leahy a better prospect.
Overview
Leahy plays almost exclusively out of the defensive end position with some time at tackle. I’d say it’s about an 80-20 split. He displays a pretty good push up front but needs to improve his explosiveness. With his size he should be blowing offensive lineman off the line but that doesn’t seem to be the case. He does however have a nice stop-gap ability, much like Derek Wolfe, shutting down the run game with ease.
Outlook
Defensive tackle and a redshirt (I’ll get to that in a second). Leahy does not display that outside burst that I like to see in defensive ends, which calls for players to have a nice mix of bull rush and finese in their game. Walter Stewart is a nice example of this as he has enough finese and speed to work around an offensive tackle while at the same time possessing the strength to blow through him if necessary. Leahy is too one dimensional and will slide inside at Cincinnati. Now to his redshirt. Nothing personal, but in 2012 the Bearcats should be stacked along the line. This is good for Leahy as he can add some muscle and slowly learn the defensive scheme.
